January 20, 1981—Ronald Reagan's Inaugural ceremony in progress on the Capitol's west front.

The first Inauguration of George Washington occurred on April 30, 1789, in front of New York's Federal Hall. Once the nation’s capitol had moved through Philadelphia to Washington, DC, presidents took their oath in the Senate Chamber, and then selections ranged from the East Front of the Capitol to the House Chamber to the East Front of the Capitol, to the Capitol Rotund. Eight vice presidents turned president have taken the oath in more somber, private circumstances because they were sworn in as a result of their predecessor’s death.
