Coolies transferring bales of jute from boats at Saraghat

River Valleys were largely commercial areas in India dominated by traders and bankers, but mostly Indian laborers (called coolies at the time) that unload and load the various barges. Jute was an important natural resources used for reinforcing thread and rope, especially in sacks that transport of cotton.
